Labeller should be replaced by direct printing
In 2018, the Company Jürgen Langbein plant decided to simplify the labelling of the cardboard boxes and replace them with direct printing. In the company, the labels of the bottles and glasses were already equipped with printers from Allen Coding providing best before date. As they were very satisfied with the service and the devices, the new printing systems should also come from Allen Coding.
Direct printing is very economical compared to labelling
In a first test position, a packaging line was assembled with a Diagraph IJ4000 large character printer, which still provides up to 10,000 cartons of high-resolution print image every day.
The printer is extremely economical, as almost 340,000 prints can be made with one bottle of ink. Bernd Deukert, Production Manager at Jürgen Langbein, explains:
"Compared to labeling, there is also no need to store labels. In addition, the waste of labels and the high wear and tear on the print heads were very costly for us."
Print data comes directly from the Enterprise Resource Planning System (ERP)
More than 200 different print images for the cartons are all in the ERP and are sent directly to the printer. Since different products are packed on the line every day, this means an enormous time saving. Also, the plant downtime when changing the label rolls by hand is now eliminated.
Some facts about the Diagraph IJ4000 large character printer
The Diagraph IJ4000 produces print images up to 100 mm in height. With one controller, up to 4 printheads with different print images can be controlled. The ink can be refilled centrally at the controller during operation. Networking is easily possible to avoid operating errors.
Large character printing prevails
After the successful use at the Kaltenkirchen plant, Menzi in Versmold, their sister company, was also equipped with a Diagraph IJ4000. In the meantime, the second packaging line in the Kaltenkirchen plant has also been converted to large character coding and is running to the utmost satisfaction.
Mr. Schäfer, Head of Labelling, sums up the experience with direct printing in this way: "We are the premium company among soup manufacturers, quality is our top priority. At Allen Coding, the service quality has always convinced us and the new coding systems are exactly to my taste."
